Man upset at $1,200 fish dish at RWS

Waiter did not mention price during order.
RWS says goodwill discount given

By Yeo Sam Jo
June 30, 2010

A 35-year-old diner and four friends feasted on a steamed fish dish at a restaurant in Resorts World Sentosa (RWS). At the end of the meal, upon receiving the bill, his jaw hit the ground.

What seemed like a simple dish ended up costing a whopping S$1,224.

The diner, who only wanted to be known as Mr Liu, took his four friends to RWS’ Feng Shui Inn restaurant on June 12. He had initially asked for marble goby, better known locally as “soon hock”, but was told there was no stock for the fish.

A waiter then recommended the white sultan fish instead. The group agreed, without enquiring about the cost of the dish. But when the bill arrived, the five diners were shocked to find that the single sultan fish, weighing 1.8kg, set them back by a staggering S$1,224.

“(The waiter) didn’t mention the price (of the fish), and we also didn’t think too much about it and just said okay,” Mr Liu told Lianhe Wanbao.

He complained about the price of the fish during payment and the restaurant responded by giving him a 15% discount on the bill as a gesture of goodwill.

“The customer has the right to know and the restaurant should have made clear its price so we could decide whether it was worth it,” Mr Liu said.

In response to the incident, an RWS spokesman claims that the practice of not disclosing menu prices is common in upscale restaurants. “It is not always appropriate to state menu prices to high-end customers who have come to expect a certain discretion when they entertain high-level guests, ” he explains.

RWS conceded that the incident could have been a “lapse of judgement” but it was smoothed over quickly with an on-the-spot discount.

But is S$68 per 100g for a sultan fish a reasonable amount?

A quick comparison with Capital Restaurant, which has been selling sultan fish for 36 years, reveals that the dish can go for as low as S$6 per 100g. This is less than a tenth of Fengshui Inn’s price tag on the fish.

Chef Pung Lu Tin, 50, of Seafood International Market and Restaurant, explained the sultan fish is sought-after because it was not easy to catch. He added that its meat was “very smooth”.

“The flesh is tender and snow white. It’s a wild river fish, so it eats fruits that drops from trees and bears the fragrance of fruit,” Chef Huang Ching Biao, 58, kitchen operations director at Jin Shan restaurant at MBS told The New Paper.

But despite its draw, both chefs added that they have not come across any commanding such a high price. One seafood distributor known only as Mr Lee even described the price of the fish at Fengshui Inn as “outrageous”.

This seafood shocker is reminiscent of an incident that occurred in March last year, where six American tourists were charged S$239 for a mere eight tiger prawns at Newton hawker centre.

The stall involved had its licence suspended for three months by the National Environment Agency (NEA) for breaching licencing conditions.

Incidents like these throw the spotlight on questionable charging practices in Singapore. For a country positioning itself as a tourism hub, these bad dining experiences are sure to leave a bitter after-taste.

Gendang Kasturi (Green Bean Goreng)

.
'Gendang Kasturi' is a Malay cake made of Green Beans and deep fried like Fritters. You may have heard of Green Bean Soup, but this is Green Bean Fried or Green Bean Goreng... where 'goreng' means 'fried' in Malay.

By-the-way, the word 'Kasturi' has a nice sound to it.

Here are some pictures of what it looks like.

Quote ~ Be The One Who Loves.

.
Be the one who loves;
Because, who in their right minds
will want to live with people
who don't care for one another.
~ PGA

Read on...

Love Your Enemies (Matthew 5:43-47)

.
Who in their right minds will want to live with people who don't care for one another. The place to start is where you're at... that's right, the man (or woman) in the mirror... YOU!

It is natural for us to love our neighbor & hate our enemy. If you love only those who love you, what's so special about that? That is so easy, anyone can do it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bible Quote:
Love Your Enemies (Matthew 5:43-47, Bible NIV ~ New International Version)
[43] “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ [44] But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, [45] that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. [46] If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? [47] And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? [48] Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
.
Why We Need To Be Honest ~ PGA
.
Why do we need to be honest? Why do we need to do good? Why NOT-Doing-Anything-Bad, is NOT enough? It’s all because Heaven is going to be filled with people who do good. Heaven is going to be filled with people who take care of each other. Heaven is going to be filled with people who really and truly love one another.
Do I have any proof that Heaven is going to be that way?
No, but this is what I believe.
If it turns out as NOT-TRUE, nothing's going to happen.
If It turns out TRUE, 2 things can happen. Either you go to Hell or to Heaven and I know where I want to go. How about you?
Anyway, who in their right minds will want to live with people who don't care for one another.
Honesty does exist. Read news report here...
The Maestro Story
http://www.maestroguitars.com/aboutus/profile.htm
Welcome to the golden era for guitarists. With so many established choices in the market, the actualisation of Maestro Guitars was always going to be an uphill battle. The journey of Maestro Guitars from its humble beginnings has been fraught with endless frustration, learning, and success. The story began in 2001 when Hozen was still a young sophomore.
Ho Zen Yong, founder of Maestro guitars and affectionately known as Hozen, possesses an entrepreneurial spirit so often lacking in Singapore. Having dabbled in various business ventures during his varsity days in SMU (Singapore Management University), plunging into the guitar business was a surprise to many. His father who runs a piano shop (Renner Piano Co.) was probably a vital influence in this seemingly bold choice; especially in Singapore. Being immersed in music since young, Hozen plays some piano and guitar but has always been fond of the six string. When he was an undergraduate, he had already envisioned a line of guitars which would eventually set new standards in terms of quality and affordability.
The Anger Ladder ~ by Dr. Ross Campbell
.
Although written for parents and teenagers, anyone can use this Anger Ladder to improve their Anger Management.
We should all strive to achieve the first 2 rungs of the Anger Ladder. Which is '1' ~ Pleasant behavior; & '2' ~ Seeking resolution to the conflict; Dr Campbell suggests that we find out where we are on the Anger Ladder and move up one rung at a time.
The worst way for anyone to handle anger is through passive-aggressive (or PA) behavior. In PA behavior, a person uses indirect means to get back in anger at another person — for example, procrastinating, stubbornness, intentional inefficiency and “forgetfulness.” The person acts in these ways to provoke anger. A PA person refuses to accept responsibility for his or her own behavior.
Note that PA is at number '15' which is worst than '13' ~ Emotionally destructive behavior; & '14' ~ Physical abuse; because it is not easily noticed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Anger Ladder ~ by Dr. Ross Campbell
(taken from his book 'How to Really Love Your Teenager')

1) Pleasant behavior;
2) Seeking resolution to the conflict;
3) Focusing anger on the source only;
4) Holding to the primary complaint, not to peripheral issues;
5) Thinking logically and constructively;
6) Unpleasant and loud behavior;
7) Cursing;
8) Becoming angry at someone else who is a bystander instead of at the source of the anger;
9) Expressing unrelated complaints;
10) Throwing objects;
11) Destroying property;
12) Verbal abuse;
13) Emotionally destructive behavior;
14) Physical abuse; and
15) Passive-aggressive behavior.

Note: Dr Campbell did mention a "16" which represents Homicidal attempts, homicidal threats and homicide which is worst but it's not covered in the scope of his book.

Prayer Of Joy ~ by Mother Teresa

I smile, and the world smiles with me.
I laugh, and the world laughs too.
I praise you, dear God, and the world breaks out in song.
For you are the source of my joy,
the wellspring of my love,
the key to my compassion.
Be with me today, tomorrow, and forever,
that I may bring your joy to all I meet.

Drummer ~ Papa Jo Jones

This must be the one of the best (if not the best) and most entertaining drum solos I have ever had the chance to see. Playing a drum solo is not all about how hard you hit the skins, but how good you are at keeping the beat and how entertaining you can be. Enjoy!

How do you lure a lizard out from a hiding place?

http://eletter.multiply.com/journal/item/93/How_do_you_lure_a_lizard_out_from_a_hiding_place

.
1 ~ Use a very, very thin, long stick very much like the one from the lily broom.

2 ~ Tie a bit of cotton or thread at the end --- this is to imitate an insect to be used as bait.

3 ~ Slowly lure the lizard with this stick.

This should be useful especially if you want to get rid of it.
Good Luck in facing your fears.

ANSWER to Maths Question ~ 2011 Feb 21 (NON-Algebra Method)

Here's my answer to a Maths Question I posted...
This is the NON-Algebra Method. 'Click here for the Algebra Method'.

~~~
Question:
Minah is 18 yrs older than Aishah.
In 6 yrs time, Minah's age will be twice as much as Aishah.
What is Aishah's age now?
~~~.
Answer: Aishah's age now should be 12 years old.

Let’s check if my answer is correct.

If Aishah is 12 years old now… then Minah will be 30 years old.
In 6 years time Aishah will be 12 + 6 = 18 years old.
In 6 years time Minah will be 30 + 6 = 36 years old.
In 6 yrs time, Miniah’s age (at 36) will be twice as much as Aishah (which is 18)
… I think this answer is correct.

Here’s how I got the answer…

While searching for Catholic Resposorial Psalms, I came across these webite links, which are somehow related to each other and seem Catholic, although I've yet to see the word 'Catholic' on their website... perhaps I've not explored enough. I did a quick explore and found Responsorial Psalms, Chant & Mass Music.

Well, anyway, I'll probably be visiting these sights from time to time.

O Love That Will Not Let Me Go (Lyrics)

(Acappella Male 4 Part Harmony = Download)

O Love that wilt not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.

(this verse was not sung in the audio above)
O light that foll’west all my way,
I yield my flick’ring torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.

O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.

O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.

Fear Of Cockroaches

We all have our fears; we'll just have to manage our them. Avoid your fears as much as you can so you don't have to face them Un-Necessarily. When you can't avoid them, you'll have to face them, think of ways you can manage them so that when you meet your fears, you're ready to do what you have to do.

Here is an animated image of a cockroach. I've minimised it out of respect for those who have this phobia with cockroaches.

Email Title: Wisdom from a Taxi Driver

Email Content:
Good morning Folks!
What a beautiful story on a Wednesday morning! Isn't it true? Sometimes, we are just blinded and we react. Anyway, have a good day!
Blessings!

The Garbage Truck (Story)

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded and missed the other car by just inches!

The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us.

My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean he was really friendly.

So I asked, "Why did you just do that? That guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!" That is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, "The Law of the Garbage Truck."

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you.

Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets,

So... "Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't."

Life is ten percent of what you make it and ninety percent of how you take it!

Saint Theresa's Prayer

Quote:
"Doing the little things in life well and with great love" ~ Saint Theresa of the Roses

She is known as 'Saint Theresa of the Roses'

I received this via email. It did ask me to forward this email to others and so it is in fact, a Chained-Email. I’m not in favor of Chained-Emails, so I will NOT be forwarding this email.

However, I do like the prayer and St Theresa is a good saint to follow. I have yet to verify if this prayer is in deed, St Theresa’s but it is a good prayer on it’s own.

Saint Theresa is also known as the 'Saint of the Little Ways', meaning she believed in 'doing the little things in life well and with great love'. She is represented by roses.

Saint Theresa's Prayer
May today, there be peace within. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given t o you. May you be content knowing you are a child of God. Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us. Amen
